Already a history

The season 2011/2012 was closed by the mass-starts in Khanty-Mansiysk and it already has been a history. The last day of the biathlon’s year will be memorable by a farewell race of Magdalena Neuner, the first victory of the world cup’s total from Martin Fourcade, and of course a young and daring Russian men’s team. The most vivid moments of the last competition day are in the photo reportage of Biathlonrus.com.

The last competition day of the season 2011/2012 was opened by a men’s mass-start. The day before Martin Fourcade won a Big Crystal Globe ahead of schedule, and there was no any global intrigues in the race. The Russian fans were happy to see a positive beginning of the mass-start, with Anton Shipulin heading a peloton and Andrey Makoveev, Evgeny Garanichev, Timofey Laphin, Dmitry Malyshko staying close to top-10.

Shipulin and Malyshko were leading before the third shooting. After their mistakes in shooting the Russians were left out of the top-3. Shipulin was running 9th, Emil Hegle Svendsen was leading the race. At the last shooting Anton had no mistakes, and his opponents were not accurate. This brought Anton to the season place, but he could not keep his Silver. German Arnd Peiffer outstripped Shipulin at the finish. Svendsen celebrated a victory.

Anton Shipulin won a last podium for the Russian team at the world cups in the season. Overall Russian men’s team had 16 podiums this season, which indicates a progress comparing to the last season, when we had 11 podiums.

The women’s mass-start was the last race for Magdalena Neuner in her carrier. She did everything to finish her last race at the podium, but her bad luck in shooting prevented her from finishing in top-3. 6 mistakes and 6th place is the result of German start in her farewell race. After the finish Neuner got her third and last Big Crystal Globe.

Daria Domracheva used Neuner’s mistakes and had a second in a row victory in Khanty-Mansiysk. With this race Domracheva hinted at who is going to be a leader next season. Only 28 points divided Neuner and Domracheva in the total.

The season 2011/2012 has already been a history. The Russian team showed an improvement of its results not only in the men’s team but also in the women’s team. The Russian ladies finished at the podium 11 times, comparing with 7 podiums in the last season. Both of the teams won the Nation cups. The men’s team had the last victory in 2007, women’s – in 2005.

The only negative moment was the team’s performance at the world championship in Ruhpolding, where our sportsmen won only two bronze medals. Olga Vilukhina and Anton Shipulin were the Bronze medalists of the pursuit races. “Of course I know our goals for the next season. We will need to defend out title in the Nation cup and have a better performance in the world championship. We will have two key points in the next season – a world cup in Sochi and a world championship in Nove Mesto,” commented a head coach of the women’s team Wolfgang Pichler.
