After the main start of the last four years and a short break, biathlon battles are back to our lives. Men’s and women’s sprints in Pokljuka were successful for the Russian team. Silver of Anton Shipulin was expected, while second place of Daria Virolainen in her first race at the World Cup is a nice surprise. News of the day – Anton Shipulin and Daria Virolainen placed second in sprints in Pokljuka

Olympic champion Anton Shipulin finished 1,5 seconds behind the winner of the race, Bjoern Ferry of Sweden. Anton promised to attack together with Dmitry Malyshko (4th place) in the pursuit, which will take place on Saturday.

«I am satisfied with the result, as I spent some time at home and did not have a chance to train properly. I had only three skiing training sessions between the Olympics and World Cup. My results will improve. I am sure that I will get back my competition mode and gain speed”, said Anton after the finish.

Daria Virolainen who started the one before last proved that everything is possible in biathlon – even to rise to the podium in debut race at the World Cup.

“I have been nervous for several days, as my calmness is only appearance. My mother did not give me any advises. My father told me the main thing was to deal with shooting and work well on the first lap. I usually lose time on it. The main thing is that I shot clean. This is a very good result considering my shooting performance in the season», commented Daria after the finish.

Surprise of the day – victory of Katharina Innerhofer in sprint

Women’s sprint was reach for surprises. Austria’s Katharina Innerhofer became the author of another sensation. 22nd place of individual race in Ruhpolding taken two months ago was the best result of Katharina before this sprint.

Speed of the day – Daria Domracheva and Martin Fourcade

Heroes of the Olympic Games in Sochi Domracheva and Fourcade had the best speed. However, problems at the shooting range prevented them from finishing in top-6. Two misses left Fourcade on the seventh place.

Daria was even less lucky – five misses and unusual 28th place.

Shooting of the day – Dmitry Malyshko and Katharina Innerhofer

Accurate and fast shooting were the motto of Dmitry and Katharina in sprint. Both athletes shot clean, which was the rare case in those difficult weather conditions, and did it faster than the others. This helped the Austrian athlete to win and put Malyshko to the fourth place.

Comment of the day – Bjoern Ferry: “Only Bjoerndalen want to start another race 10 minutes after the finish, not me”

The winner of the men’s sprint Bjoern Ferry answered the question of one Norwegian journalists regarding the end of his carrier with humor, which is usual for him. Next season biathlon world will miss his jokes.
